DAR ES SALAAM, May 10 (Xinhua) -- Two Tanzanian prisoners who were released last month on presidential amnesty have been killed by an angry mob after they were found in possession of various stolen items in Kibaha district of Coast region, police said on Monday.

The two prisoners were among 5,001 inmates who were pardoned last month by President Samia Suluhu Hassan to mark the 57th Anniversary of the Union between Tanganyika and Zanzibar that formed the United Republic of Tanzania.

Wankyo Nyigesa, Coast regional police commander, told a news conference that the two pardoned prisoners were killed on Saturday after an angry mob attacked them with stones, machetes and sticks.

He said the duo was found in possession of various items, including television sets and mobile phones that they stole from various homes.

"Both victims were serving jail terms at Mkuza prison before they secured the presidential amnesty," said Nyigesa.
